How We Treat Auto Accident Injuries in Cambridge

A car accident loads the spine in a way nothing else does: the body is held by a seat belt while the head keeps moving. The result is a sprain of the small ligaments and joints of the neck, a strain of the muscles that tried to stop the motion, and often a jolt through the low back and sacroiliac joints from bracing against the floor. Most of what we treat after a collision is that pattern, whether it came from a rear-end tap on Memorial Drive or a side impact at a Cambridge Street intersection.

Dr. Bromberg's first job is to sort out what was injured and what was not. He palpates each level of the neck and back for the tenderness, swelling and loss of motion that mark a sprained joint, checks the shoulders, ribs and hips that took the belt and the steering wheel, and runs neurological testing whenever there is numbness, tingling or pain into an arm or leg. He is also looking for the things a chiropractor should not treat: signs of a fracture, a concussion that needs medical follow-up, or a nerve problem that is getting worse. Those go for imaging or to a physician first. The whiplash page covers the injury itself in more detail.

Treatment starts gently, because acutely injured tissue does not want to be forced. In the first week or two that usually means low-force mobilization rather than a quick adjustment, Active Release Technique on the muscles that are in spasm, and careful range of motion work to keep the neck from stiffening into a protective brace. As the inflammation settles, treatment progresses: spinal adjustments to restore motion to the joints that locked up, deeper soft tissue work to break down the scar tissue that forms in a healing sprain, and rehab exercises to rebuild the strength and endurance of the deep neck and core muscles that the crash switched off. If the exam or imaging shows a disc was injured, spinal decompression is added. If the low back took the hit, the plan follows the approach on the lower back pain page.

The timing matters. Whiplash symptoms are often delayed by a day or more, because adrenaline masks pain and inflammation builds slowly. We advise an evaluation within 72 hours of the accident even if you feel fine, for two reasons. Clinically, the earliest days are when gentle motion prevents the joint from stiffening and the muscles from locking into a pattern that is much harder to undo at week six. Practically, an exam dated inside that window ties your injuries to the crash in a way an insurer cannot easily argue with. What to do in the first 72 hours walks through the steps.

What Your Visits Look Like

The first visit is longer than a routine one. Dr. Bromberg takes a detailed history of the collision: direction of impact, whether you were the driver or a passenger, head position, whether the headrest was adjusted, whether the airbag deployed, whether you were seen in an emergency room, and what has hurt since. Each answer predicts a different injury pattern. Then he examines you, measuring neck and back range of motion, testing strength, reflexes and sensation, and checking every area that hurts and a few that do not yet. If he needs an X-ray, MRI or CT to rule something out, he refers you to an area center and reads the result himself before treatment goes further.

The exam findings are written up in detail on that first day. That record is the foundation of both your treatment plan and your insurance claim, so it is done properly: a diagnosis, the objective measurements that support it, a plan with a stated frequency and duration, and a note that the injuries are consistent with the accident you described. You usually receive a first, gentle treatment the same visit.

Early follow-ups are frequent, typically two to three visits a week for the first two or three weeks, because an acute sprain responds to regular, gentle input and stiffens between long gaps. Each visit re-checks the tender segments, treats the joints and muscle, and progresses the home exercises. As you improve, visits taper to weekly and then every other week. A straightforward whiplash case often runs six to twelve weeks; a case with a disc injury, a concussion or pre-existing neck problems runs longer. Dr. Bromberg writes the estimate down at the start and revises it on real progress.

Progress is measured, not guessed. Range of motion is re-measured at set intervals, usually every two to four weeks, along with pain scores, headache frequency, sleep, and how long you can sit, drive or work at a screen. Those re-evaluations are documented too. If the numbers stall, the plan changes: a different technique, decompression, imaging that was not needed at the start, or a referral. If you plateau short of full recovery, he says so and documents what remains, which matters for any settlement.

What to Expect: Results and Timelines

Most people with a soft tissue neck or back injury from a car accident recover well, and most of that recovery happens in the first two to three months. The usual shape is this: the first week is often the worst, as inflammation peaks around day two or three. Gentle treatment through that stretch brings the pain down and keeps motion. By the second or third week, headaches and the deep ache ease, turning the head gets easier, and sleep improves. Weeks four through eight are about restoring full range, rebuilding strength, and getting back to the desk, the bike and the gym without flaring. The last stage is the slowest: the final few degrees of rotation and the endurance to sit through a full workday.

Several things slow it down. Waiting weeks to start care, so that the joints have stiffened and the muscles have learned a guarded pattern. A disc injury or nerve involvement on top of the sprain. A prior neck problem that the crash aggravated. A concussion, which needs its own management and makes everything else harder. Returning too early to the position that provokes it, which for Kendall Square patients usually means a laptop at a standing desk the day after the crash. A high-stress, poor-sleep stretch, which the aftermath of an accident tends to be. We plan around these rather than pretend they are not there.

If you are not improving on schedule, Dr. Bromberg changes the plan, and if the change does not help either, he refers out. Progressive weakness, worsening numbness, severe headache that is getting worse, vision changes, confusion, or pain that does not change with position at all are reasons for a prompt medical evaluation, not another chiropractic visit. He coordinates with your primary care physician, a neurologist, an orthopedist or a pain specialist as needed, and the record of what was tried and when goes with you. Whiplash recovery after a car accident goes deeper on what the weeks look like.

Who It Is For, and Who It Is Not For

Auto accident rehabilitation is for anyone who was in a collision and has neck pain, back pain, headaches, stiffness, shoulder or arm symptoms, or pain into the hip or leg, whether it started at the scene or crept in over the following days. It is also for the person who feels fine, because the exam can find a joint sprain before it has become a symptom, and the documented baseline protects you if symptoms appear at day five. Drivers, passengers, cyclists hit by a car, and pedestrians are all covered under Massachusetts PIP and all respond to the same approach. Patients who were seen in an emergency room, cleared of fracture, and sent home with muscle relaxants and no plan are among the most common we see.

It is not the first stop after a serious crash. If you have a suspected fracture, lost consciousness, have a severe or worsening headache, cannot move a limb, have numbness in the saddle area or a change in bowel or bladder control, or have chest or abdominal pain, go to the emergency room. Chiropractic care comes after those are ruled out, and Dr. Bromberg will say so on the phone. He also does not treat an unstable spine, an acute fracture at the level in question, a spinal cord injury, or a concussion as the primary problem; those are referred, with chiropractic care for the neck and back picked up once the treating physician clears it.

An honest limit: not every injury resolves completely. A minority of whiplash patients are left with some residual stiffness or intermittent pain, especially when care started late, a disc was damaged, or there was significant pre-existing degeneration. When that is the likely outcome, Dr. Bromberg tells you early and documents it, which matters for both your expectations and your claim.

Cost, Insurance and Booking

Massachusetts is a no-fault state. Personal Injury Protection, or PIP, on your own auto policy pays for reasonable and necessary medical care after an accident, including chiropractic care, regardless of who caused the crash, with a statutory minimum of $8,000 per person. In most cases that means you pay nothing out of pocket for treatment here. The office verifies your PIP coverage and opens the claim with your auto insurer before treatment begins, and bills the insurer directly, per visit. There are no prepaid packages and nothing to pay up front. The details, including what happens when PIP is exhausted and how health insurance picks up afterward, are on the auto PIP page and in what PIP covers in Massachusetts. The general insurance page covers everything else.

Documentation is part of the service. Dr. Bromberg provides a detailed initial examination report, dated treatment notes for every visit, periodic re-evaluation reports with measured findings, and a final report when care ends. Those records go to your auto insurer as part of the PIP claim and, if you have an attorney, to them on request. They are written to be read by an adjuster: the diagnosis, the objective findings, the connection to the crash, the plan, and the response to care. Dr. Bromberg has provided this kind of record to insurers and attorneys for decades.

No referral is needed. You can call or walk in without seeing another doctor first; walk-ins are welcome during office hours and same-day slots are held for patients in pain, which after a crash is most people. Same-week appointments are the norm otherwise. Hours are Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 8am to 1pm and 3pm to 6pm.

The office is at 201 Broadway, first floor, a six-minute walk from the Kendall/MIT Red Line station and about ten minutes from Lechmere. If you are driving, there is free street parking and metered spots on Broadway and the side streets, and the entrance is at street level. Bring your auto insurance information, the police report or crash exchange form if you have it, and any emergency room paperwork; the new patients page has the full list. Call (617) 494-1166 and tell the front desk it was a car accident, so the right paperwork is ready when you arrive.

Questions about your own case? Call (617) 494-1166 or request an appointment. Walk-ins welcome Monday, Wednesday & Friday: 8am–1pm & 3pm–6pm.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

As soon as possible, ideally within 72 hours. Many auto accident injuries don't show symptoms right away, but early treatment prevents chronic problems and strengthens any insurance claim.

Yes. Most auto insurance policies include PIP (Personal Injury Protection) coverage for chiropractic care. We help navigate the insurance process.

Adrenaline can mask pain for days or weeks. Whiplash, soft tissue injuries, and spinal misalignments often have delayed symptoms. Get evaluated even if you feel fine.

Yes. Dr. Bromberg provides thorough treatment documentation that supports insurance and legal proceedings.

It does not change your coverage. Massachusetts PIP is no-fault, so your own auto policy pays for your reasonable medical care, including chiropractic, regardless of who caused the crash. Treatment here is billed to that coverage the same way either way.

Usually, yes. The emergency room rules out fractures and serious injury; it does not examine or treat the joint sprains and muscle strains that cause most post-accident pain. If you have any neck or back pain, stiffness or headache, or even if you feel fine, an evaluation within 72 hours finds those injuries early and documents them.

Yes. With your written permission, Dr. Bromberg provides your examination reports, treatment notes and final report to your attorney on request, and answers their questions about your care. You do not need an attorney to be treated here or to use your PIP coverage.

Generally, yes. Massachusetts PIP covers pedestrians and cyclists struck by a car, usually through the policy of the vehicle involved. We help you identify the right policy and open the claim before treatment starts.

PIP pays for reasonable care related to the accident, and the sooner you start, the clearer that connection is. Waiting weeks or months makes recovery slower and gives an insurer room to argue the injury came from something else. If it has been a while, call anyway; Dr. Bromberg can still evaluate you and document what he finds.
