EMSculpt NEO

EMSculpt NEO uses two technologies at once: radiofrequency (RF) to permanently destroy fat cells (30% average reduction) and HIFEM to trigger supramaximal muscle contractions that build real muscle (25% average increase). Most patients come in for fat reduction and body sculpting, then notice they're also getting meaningfully stronger. FDA-cleared for both body contouring and rehabilitation.

EMSculpt NEO at Bromberg Chiropractic
How It Works

How EMSculpt NEO Works

Radiofrequency energy heats fat cells to the point of permanent destruction through a process called apoptosis. Your body flushes them naturally over weeks. At the same time, HIFEM (High-Intensity Focused Electromagnetic) technology triggers thousands of supramaximal muscle contractions per session, forcing muscle fibers to adapt and grow. The result is 30% less fat from the RF, 25% more muscle from the HIFEM, and real functional strength alongside the visible changes.

EMSculpt NEO at 201 Broadway, Cambridge

How We Do EMSculpt NEO in Cambridge

EMSculpt NEO at Bromberg Chiropractic is run in the same first-floor office at 201 Broadway where Dr. Bromberg has practiced for more than 40 years, under his supervision. The wellness side of the practice has its own site at brombergwellness.com, but the room, the front desk and the doctor are the same. It is a doctor-supervised treatment, not an aesthetician-led one, and that shapes how it is done here.

The device does two things at once through an applicator strapped over the treatment area. Radiofrequency energy heats the fat layer to the point where fat cells are damaged and cleared by the body over the following weeks. At the same time, HIFEM, a high-intensity focused electromagnetic field, drives the underlying muscle through thousands of contractions far stronger than you could produce on your own. A session takes 30 minutes. The standard course is four sessions spaced 5 to 10 days apart. The manufacturer's clinical data reports an average 30% reduction in fat and an average 25% increase in muscle in the treated area. Those are the manufacturer's averages, not a promise about your body; some people get more, some get less, and the honest version of this is that your result depends on your starting point and what you do afterward.

What Dr. Bromberg looks for is different from what a spa looks for. Before anything is strapped on, he examines the area and screens you for contraindications. For abdominal treatment he is interested in the abdominal wall as a spine stabilizer, not only as a surface: whether there is a separation of the rectus muscles after pregnancy, whether a hernia is present, whether the core weakness he sees is contributing to low back pain you have also come in about. The device is FDA-cleared for both body contouring and rehabilitation, and in this office it gets used for both.

That is also where it connects to the rest of what we do. A patient whose back keeps going out because the deep core does not fire can combine EMSculpt NEO with adjustments and a home exercise program. A patient with leakage as well as a weak core can pair it with Emsella, which works the pelvic floor from below. Neither is required; many people come for the body contouring alone. If you want a plain description of the technology before you call, read what to know about EMSculpt NEO.

What Your Visits Look Like

The first visit is a consultation, and it is a conversation before it is a treatment. Dr. Bromberg asks what you are hoping to change, takes a health history, examines the area, and screens for the things that rule the treatment out. He tells you whether he thinks you are a good candidate, what a realistic result looks like for your starting point, and whether something else would serve you better. If the answer is no, he says no.

A treatment session is straightforward. You lie down. The applicator is positioned over the area, for example the abdomen, the buttocks, the thighs, the arms or the calves, and secured. The intensity is brought up gradually over the first minutes to the level you can tolerate, and it stays there. What you feel is a strong, rhythmic muscle contraction, like an intense set you cannot stop, together with warmth from the radiofrequency. It is not painful, and the level is adjusted to you. After 30 minutes you stand up and go back to work. There is no downtime. Kendall Square patients often come over on a lunch break.

Four sessions, 5 to 10 days apart, means the course runs roughly three to six weeks from first to last session. Keeping that spacing matters; the sessions build on each other and long gaps blunt the effect. The office works around the Monday, Wednesday and Friday schedule to keep you on track.

Progress is not judged on the day of the last session. The fat clearance and the muscle change develop over the following two to three months, so the honest assessment happens then. Dr. Bromberg looks at the area and asks the practical questions: how your clothes fit, whether the core feels stronger, whether the back pain that came with the weak core has changed. If you have a specific goal, such as the belly fat that has not moved with training or a postpartum core that has not come back, the goal pages on Bromberg Wellness (brombergwellness.com) go into what usually changes first for that goal.

What to Expect: Results and Timelines

Expect visible and functional change that builds over weeks, not a transformation the morning after. Muscle firmness is often the first thing people notice, within the first few sessions. The fat change follows more slowly as the body clears the damaged cells, and the full picture is usually clear two to three months after the fourth session. The fat cells that are cleared do not come back, but the ones that remain can still grow if you gain weight, and muscle that is not used will shrink the same way any muscle does.

Several things reduce the result. Gaps longer than 10 days between sessions. Weight gain during or after the course. A starting body composition that is further from the goal than the treatment is designed for; this is a contouring and muscle treatment for people within reach of their goal weight, not a weight loss method, and we say that plainly at the consultation. And doing nothing afterward: the muscle gain holds best in people who keep training.

If you are not seeing change, Dr. Bromberg says so rather than selling another course. Sometimes a second course is reasonable; sometimes the honest answer is that this is not the right tool for what you want. Because it is sold as a defined course rather than an open-ended plan, you know what you are committing to before you start.

He refers out when the concern is something else. A hernia at the treatment site goes to a surgeon before anything is done. A significant rectus separation that may need surgical repair goes to the appropriate specialist for an opinion. Loose skin is a different problem from fat and muscle, and the device does not fix it. Weight that needs medical management goes to your physician. And a back problem that is really a disc or a nerve issue is treated as that, with the tools built for it, before anyone talks about core strengthening.

Who It Is For, and Who It Is Not For

Good candidates are men and women who are within a moderate range of their goal weight and have a stubborn area that has not responded to training, people who want measurable core strength for a sport or for a back that keeps complaining, and people recovering a weak abdominal wall after pregnancy once they have been cleared by their obstetric provider. Runners and cyclists along the Charles who have strong legs and a core that never caught up are a familiar group here, as are lab and desk workers who sit all day and have lost the deep abdominal support that sitting does not use.

It is not for everyone, and some of the exclusions are absolute. It is not done during pregnancy. It is not done over or near metal implants, and not for anyone with a pacemaker, an implanted defibrillator or another implanted electronic device. There is a body mass cutoff that we check at consultation. Recent surgery in the area, a hernia at the site, and certain medical conditions also rule it out or require clearance. This is not an exhaustive list; the screening at your consultation is, and if anything in your history gives you pause, ask there.

The honest limits are simple. It is not weight loss. It does not tighten loose skin. It does not replace exercise, and it does not replace treating the actual cause of back pain. Used for what it is, which is targeted fat reduction and muscle strengthening in a specific area, under a doctor who understands how that muscle fits into the rest of your body, it does its job.

Cost, Insurance and Booking

EMSculpt NEO is an elective wellness treatment. Insurance does not cover it, and the benefits verification we do for chiropractic care does not apply to it. It is sold as a course of four sessions, and the office quotes the current price for that course by phone at (617) 494-1166. We do not publish the figure here because it changes, and because a quote should come with a conversation about whether you are a candidate. If you are also receiving chiropractic care, that care is billed separately, per visit, through your health plan as usual; see our insurance page.

No referral is needed. Call to book a consultation, or walk in during office hours and ask; if the room is free we can often talk the same day, and consultations are generally available the same week. Hours are Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 8am to 1pm and 3pm to 6pm.

The office is at 201 Broadway, first floor, a six-minute walk up Broadway from the Kendall/MIT Red Line station and about ten minutes from Lechmere on the Green Line. There is free street parking and metered parking on Broadway and the side streets. The new patient page covers what to expect on a first visit, and the EMSculpt NEO goal pages at brombergwellness.com cover specific concerns in more depth.

Questions about your own case? Call (617) 494-1166 or request an appointment. Walk-ins welcome Monday, Wednesday & Friday: 8am–1pm & 3pm–6pm.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

RF (radiofrequency) energy heats fat cells to the point of permanent destruction, a process called apoptosis. Your body naturally flushes these destroyed cells over the following weeks. Average fat reduction is 30%.

HIFEM technology triggers thousands of supramaximal muscle contractions per session, far more intense than any gym workout. Your muscles are forced to adapt and grow. Average muscle increase is 25%.

Yes. Most patients come in wanting fat reduction and sculpted abs. What surprises them is the real functional strength gain: better core stability, improved athletic performance, and less back pain.

EMSculpt NEO is FDA-cleared for rehabilitation and functional wellness, not just aesthetics. A chiropractic practice is actually a good fit because Dr. Bromberg understands musculoskeletal function.

The standard protocol is four 30-minute sessions, spaced 5-10 days apart. Results develop over 2-3 months as your body flushes fat and the new muscle matures.

It is intense but not painful. You feel strong, rhythmic muscle contractions together with warmth from the radiofrequency. The intensity is raised gradually and set to what you can tolerate. Expect soreness afterward similar to a hard workout, which fades in a day or two.

Sometimes, and this is where having a chiropractor supervise matters. A weak core is a common contributor to recurring low back pain, and the device is FDA-cleared for rehabilitation as well as contouring. Dr. Bromberg examines your back first. During an acute flare, or when the pain is coming from a disc or a nerve, that problem is treated first and the core work waits.

To keep them, yes. The fat cells cleared by the treatment do not return, but the ones that remain can grow if you gain weight, and muscle shrinks without use. People who keep training and hold their weight keep the result. People who do not, do not.

Not during pregnancy, and not until you have been cleared by your obstetric provider after delivery. Postpartum core recovery is one of the common reasons people come in, and Dr. Bromberg checks for abdominal separation and other issues at the consultation before scheduling a course.

No. Fat freezing treatments cool the fat layer and do nothing for muscle. EMSculpt NEO uses heat from radiofrequency for the fat and an electromagnetic field for the muscle, in the same 30-minute session. If your goal is muscle as well as fat, they are not interchangeable.
