Posture & Gait Analysis at Bromberg Chiropractic
How It Works

How Posture & Gait Analysis Works

Using observation, palpation, and functional movement assessment, Dr. Bromberg evaluates your spinal alignment, pelvis position, shoulder balance, and walking mechanics. This reveals the compensatory patterns your body has developed, which are often the real source of pain. Treatment addresses these root patterns, not just where it hurts.

How We Do Posture and Gait Analysis in Cambridge

There is no pressure plate or motion capture camera in this office. Posture and gait analysis at Bromberg Chiropractic is done by Dr. Bromberg, by eye and by hand, the way he has done it for more than 40 years. That is not a limitation for what it is used for. The point is not to produce a printout. The point is to find the pattern your body has adopted to work around a problem, so the problem can be treated instead of the pattern.

Standing, he looks at you from the front, the side and the back. Where your head sits relative to your shoulders. Whether one shoulder rides higher. Whether the pelvis is tilted forward, or rotated, or dropped on one side. How the knees track and whether the arches have collapsed. He checks for a leg length difference and, more importantly, whether it is a true structural difference or a functional one caused by a rotated pelvis, because those get very different treatment.

Then he watches you walk, several passes down the hall, barefoot and in your shoes. Stride length on each side. Arm swing. Where the foot strikes and how it rolls. Whether a hip drops when the opposite foot leaves the ground. Whether the trunk leans. He adds a few functional tests: a squat, a single-leg stance, a forward bend, an overhead reach. Each one shows where the body cheats.

The Cambridge patterns are predictable. Kendall Square laptop workers with the head carried forward and the upper back rounded. Bench scientists who stand at a hood for hours with the weight on one hip. Red Line commuters climbing stairs every day with a heavy bag on the same shoulder. Runners on the Charles whose knee pain shows up on one side only, which is almost never a knee problem.

The analysis is not a treatment on its own. It decides what the treatment should be. The findings feed into spinal and pelvic adjustments, soft tissue work on the muscles that are doing too much, and a short home exercise program for the ones doing too little. When a true structural leg length difference or a spinal curve is suspected, he confirms it with an X-ray referral before building a plan around it. It is the usual starting point for lower back pain with no clear injury, for hip and knee arthritis that is worse on one side, and for plantar fasciitis that keeps coming back.

What Your Visits Look Like

The first visit begins with the history. What hurts, how long, what you do all day, how you sleep, what shoes you live in, what sports you play and which side you favor. If you have had a scan or seen someone else for this, bring the report. Then comes the physical exam, which includes the standing and walking assessment described above along with the orthopedic and neurological testing that fits your complaint. Bring the shoes you wear most, and running shoes if you run. Wear something that lets him see your knees and spine, such as shorts and a fitted top.

At the end of the first visit he explains what he found, in plain language, and what he thinks is driving the pain. If the plan is chiropractic care, you usually get a first treatment the same day. You also leave with one or two exercises, not a sheet of fifteen, because the ones that get done are the ones that count.

Follow-ups are shorter. He rechecks the one or two findings that matter most for your case, for example whether the pelvis is still rotated or whether the hip still drops on the left when you walk, and then treats based on what he sees. Exercises get progressed as you get stronger.

Most people need a run of visits over four to eight weeks, closer together at the start and spaced out once the changes hold. Posture that took years to build does not reverse in two visits, but it also should not take six months of twice-weekly care. Progress is measured by what you can tolerate: sitting through a two-hour meeting, standing through a lab shift, running the Charles loop without the knee complaining. Those are the numbers that count, along with what he sees when you stand and walk at each recheck.

What to Expect: Results and Timelines

A realistic goal is less pain and better tolerance, not textbook posture. There is no single correct way to stand, and chasing one is a mistake. A body that can move easily between positions and does not get stuck in any of them is the aim. Most people with posture-driven pain feel a difference within the first few weeks of care, with the biggest gains coming once the exercises have had time to build some strength, usually in the four-to-eight-week range.

What slows progress is almost always environment. A desk setup that has not changed. No breaks in a nine-hour sitting day. Shoes that are worn through on one side. Exercises that are done for a week and then forgotten. Dr. Bromberg will ask about all of this, because treatment three times a week cannot outrun an eight-hour posture that undoes it every day. Our guide for desk workers and the post on text neck cover the practical changes.

If the plan is not working, he looks for a structural reason he may have underweighted. A true leg length difference that needs a lift. A scoliosis that is larger than it looked. Hip joint arthritis that is driving the gait change rather than resulting from it. A foot structure problem that needs a podiatrist. He will say so plainly and change the plan or refer.

When he refers out: foot structure problems that need custom orthotics go to podiatry. Larger spinal curves, especially in adolescents, go to an orthopedist for monitoring. Patients who need a long block of supervised strengthening may do better with a physical therapist, and he will say so. A gait change that is new and has no injury behind it, particularly with loss of balance, weakness, foot drop, dizziness or numbness, needs a physician and probably a neurologist first, not a chiropractor. That is a rule he does not bend.

Who It Is For, and Who It Is Not For

Posture and gait analysis is for people whose pain has no clear injury behind it, or whose pain keeps coming back after treatment that worked for a while. It is for desk and lab workers with neck, upper back or low back pain that builds through the day. It is for runners and cyclists with recurring one-sided injuries. It is for people who have been told their X-ray is fine and are still hurting. And it is a sensible check for anyone after pregnancy, when the pelvis and core have changed and the old patterns no longer fit.

Older adults who have started to feel unsteady can benefit from the assessment, but we are honest about what it is. Dr. Bromberg can identify a pelvic or spinal contributor to balance problems and treat it, and he adapts his techniques for seniors. He is not a fall prevention program, and if the exam points to an inner ear, neurological or medication cause, he refers to the right person.

It is not the right starting point for an acute injury. A back that went out yesterday needs to be treated first, and the gait assessment waits until you can walk normally enough for it to mean anything. It is not a substitute for a pediatric orthopedist in a growing child with a visible curve, and it does not replace a neurologist when the gait change is neurological. He will not pretend otherwise.

Cost, Insurance and Booking

The assessment is part of the examination, not a separate product with its own price. We bill per visit, with no prepaid packages and no long plans sold up front. Your plan is reassessed on real progress at each visit. Most major insurance plans are accepted, and we verify your specific benefits before treatment so you know what you owe. Our insurance page explains the process, and the post on what chiropractic care costs in Massachusetts gives general context.

No referral is needed. Massachusetts allows direct access to chiropractic care. Walk-ins are welcome during office hours, same-day slots are held for people in pain, and if you call (617) 494-1166 we can usually see you the same week. Hours are Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 8am to 1pm and 3pm to 6pm.

The office is at 201 Broadway, first floor, a six-minute walk up Broadway from the Kendall/MIT Red Line station and about ten minutes from Lechmere on the Green Line. There is free street parking and metered parking on Broadway and the side streets. The new patient page covers what to bring and how the first visit runs.

Questions about your own case? Call (617) 494-1166 or request an appointment. Walk-ins welcome Monday, Wednesday & Friday: 8am–1pm & 3pm–6pm.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Poor posture puts uneven stress on your spine, joints, and muscles. Over time, this leads to chronic pain, headaches, and reduced mobility. Correcting posture addresses the root cause.

Dr. Bromberg observes your walking pattern, assesses hip/pelvis alignment, checks for leg length differences, and evaluates foot mechanics to identify imbalances.

Yes. Forward head posture and cervical misalignment are common causes of tension headaches and migraines. Correcting alignment often resolves them.

Postural habits take time to change. Most patients see measurable improvement within 4-8 weeks of consistent treatment and exercise.

No. Dr. Bromberg does the assessment by observation, palpation and functional movement testing. For the decisions it informs, which joint to adjust, which muscle to release and which exercise to prescribe, that is what is needed. A printed pressure map does not change those choices.

Yes. Bring the pair you wear most, and your running shoes if you run. The wear pattern on a sole is useful information, and he watches you walk both barefoot and shod.

Not usually. Many foot and gait problems resolve once the pelvis and hips are moving properly and the right muscles are doing their job. When foot structure itself is the driver, he refers to a podiatrist for custom orthotics rather than selling an insert in the office.

It depends on which kind. A functional difference caused by a rotated pelvis or tight hip muscles often resolves with adjustment and soft tissue work. A true structural difference in bone length cannot be adjusted away; if it is large enough to matter, he confirms it with an X-ray and may recommend a heel lift.

Often, yes. A physical therapist and a chiropractor look at the same body through different lenses, and a joint that is not moving properly can limit what strengthening alone achieves. Bring your physical therapy notes; he reads them and builds on them rather than starting over.
