When patients hear that we offer EMSculpt NEO at a chiropractic practice, they sometimes look surprised. They associate the technology with celebrity body contouring and Instagram aesthetics. And while EMSculpt NEO absolutely delivers impressive cosmetic results, the technology's ability to rapidly strengthen muscles has profound implications for rehabilitation, injury prevention, core stability, and athletic performance that most people never hear about.
Let me explain what this technology actually does, how it works, and why we integrated it into our practice at Bromberg Chiropractic.
The Technology: RF + HIFEM+ Explained
EMSculpt NEO is the first and only body contouring device that combines two distinct energies in a single treatment: radiofrequency (RF) heating and high-intensity focused electromagnetic energy (HIFEM+). These two mechanisms work simultaneously but target different tissues.
Radiofrequency (RF) Component
The RF energy heats the targeted tissue to approximately 43-44 degrees Celsius within the first few minutes of treatment. This controlled thermal stress has two effects. First, it prepares the muscles for the electromagnetic stimulation by warming them up, much like a warm-up before exercise improves performance and reduces injury risk. Second, the heat damages fat cells through a process called apoptosis (programmed cell death). The damaged fat cells are gradually cleared by the body's lymphatic system over the weeks following treatment.
HIFEM+ (High-Intensity Focused Electromagnetic) Component
This is the muscle-building component, and it is remarkable. The HIFEM+ energy triggers what are called supramaximal muscle contractions, contractions that are far more intense than anything you can achieve through voluntary exercise. During a single 30-minute session, the device induces approximately 20,000 of these supramaximal contractions.
To put that in perspective: even the most intense abdominal workout you have ever done involves a few hundred contractions at a fraction of the intensity. The sheer volume and intensity of HIFEM+ contractions forces the muscle tissue to adapt at an accelerated rate, building new muscle fibers and increasing the density of existing ones.
The Results: What Clinical Studies Show
EMSculpt NEO has been studied in multiple peer-reviewed clinical trials. The published data shows that a standard treatment course (typically four sessions over two to four weeks) produces, on average:
- 30% reduction in subcutaneous fat in the treated area
- 25% increase in muscle volume in the treated area
- Measurable reduction in waist circumference when treating the abdomen
These are averages. Individual results vary based on starting body composition, treatment area, and overall health. Importantly, these results develop over two to three months following the treatment series as the body continues to build muscle and clear damaged fat cells.
What a Treatment Session Feels Like
A session lasts 30 minutes. You lie comfortably on a treatment table while the applicator is secured over the target area, commonly the abdomen, buttocks, thighs, or arms. There is no anesthesia, no needles, and no preparation required.
When the treatment begins, you will feel a warming sensation from the RF energy, similar to a hot stone massage. This is comfortable and even pleasant. Then the HIFEM+ component kicks in, and you will feel your muscles contracting intensely. The sensation is unusual but not painful. Patients describe it as a deep, rhythmic pulsing or "doing crunches without choosing to." The device cycles through different contraction patterns, alternating between maximum contractions and relaxation phases.
There is zero downtime. You can resume all normal activities immediately after treatment, including exercise. Some patients experience mild muscle soreness for a day or two, similar to post-workout soreness, but this is typically minimal.
Who Is a Good Candidate?
EMSculpt NEO is FDA-cleared for patients with a BMI up to 35, making it accessible to a wider range of body types than many comparable technologies. Good candidates include:
- People seeking body contouring who want to reduce stubborn fat deposits and improve muscle definition without surgery or significant downtime
- Athletes and fitness enthusiasts looking to enhance muscle development in specific areas, improve core strength, or break through training plateaus
- Post-injury patients who need to rebuild muscle that has atrophied during a period of inactivity or immobilization
- Older adults experiencing age-related muscle loss (sarcopenia) who want to maintain strength and functional capacity
- Post-surgical patients who need to strengthen supporting muscles as part of their rehabilitation protocol
- Anyone with core weakness contributing to chronic lower back pain or poor posture
EMSculpt NEO is not appropriate for individuals with metal or electronic implants in the treatment area (such as pacemakers or metal plates), pregnant women, or those with certain medical conditions. We evaluate every patient individually to ensure the treatment is safe and appropriate.
Why a Chiropractor's Office, Not a Med Spa
This is where our approach differs meaningfully from most EMSculpt NEO providers. At a typical med spa, the technology is used purely for aesthetics. The goal begins and ends with how you look. At Bromberg Chiropractic, we use the same technology with a broader clinical lens.
Consider a patient with chronic lower back pain driven by weak core musculature. Traditional rehabilitation involves weeks or months of progressive core strengthening exercises, exercises that are often difficult to perform correctly when you are in pain. EMSculpt NEO can rapidly strengthen the deep core muscles (transversus abdominis, multifidus, pelvic floor) that stabilize the lumbar spine, providing a foundation of support that makes chiropractic adjustments more effective and longer-lasting.
Or consider a patient recovering from a sports injury who has experienced significant muscle atrophy during their recovery period. EMSculpt NEO can accelerate the muscle-rebuilding process, helping them return to full activity faster and with less risk of re-injury.
When we prescribe EMSculpt NEO, it is integrated into a comprehensive treatment plan that may include chiropractic adjustments, manual therapy, and rehabilitative exercises. The technology is a powerful tool, but it is most effective as part of a coordinated approach to musculoskeletal health, not as a standalone aesthetic service.
The Rehabilitation and Athletic Benefits Most People Miss
The aesthetic results of EMSculpt NEO get all the headlines, but the functional benefits are equally compelling:
- Core stabilization: A stronger core means better spinal support, reduced lower back pain, improved balance, and more efficient movement in every activity from walking to competitive sports.
- Pelvic floor strengthening: The pelvic floor muscles play a critical role in core stability and continence. EMSculpt NEO can strengthen these muscles in ways that are difficult to achieve through Kegels alone. (For dedicated pelvic floor treatment, we also offer EMSELLA.)
- Muscle symmetry: Imbalances between left and right, or between opposing muscle groups, are a common contributor to pain and injury. Targeted EMSculpt NEO treatments can address specific weaknesses.
- Post-injury rehabilitation: Rebuilding atrophied muscle after immobilization, surgery, or prolonged inactivity.
- Injury prevention: Stronger muscles protect joints. Building strength in the muscles surrounding vulnerable areas (knees, hips, lower back) reduces injury risk during physical activity.
